First Year


First Year focuses on introducing you to central concepts and genres and establishing your communication stream or Minor.

You must select and complete the following courses:

Two core required courses:

CMN210 Text, Image, and Sound
CMN279 Introduction to Professional Communication

Two core electives from ProCom. Not all electives will be offered each year. Choices will include:

CMN211 Language and Power,
CMN212 Environmental Communication
CMN288 Promotional Communication in New Media Contexts

Two core electives from other programs. These core courses reflect central competencies required for the BA degree. In addition, taking these courses will allow you to start focusing on a communication stream or work towards a Minor.

Three professionally related elective courses. You can choose either elective courses in ProCom at the first year level or elective courses offered by other programs. To assist you with determining a communication stream or to pursue a Minor, we will provide you with guidance in your selection. A list of professionally related electives external to ProCom will be available after January 2013.

Second Year


Second year focuses on developing more integration of theory and practice and developing key competencies.

You must select and complete the following courses:

Five core required courses:

CMN314 Professional Presentations
CMN448 Introduction to Visual Communication
CMN222 Digital Discourse and Design
CMN215 Messages, Modalities, and Media
CMN216 Communication Revolutions

One core elective from another program

These core courses reflect central competencies required for the BA degree.  In addition, taking these courses will allow you to start focusing on a communications stream or work towards a Minor.

One core elective from ProCom. Not all electives will be offered each year.  Choices will include:

CMN213 Texts in Social Contexts, CMN214 Communication and Language, CMN413 Corporate Communications, CMN414 Interpersonal Communication in Management, CMN443 Contemporary Intercultural Communication, CMN450 Participatory Media and Communication

One professionally related elective. You can choose either elective courses at the first or second year level in ProCom or elective courses offered by other programs. To assist you with determining a communication stream or to pursue a Minor, we will provide you with guidance in your selection.  A list of professionally related electives external to ProCom will be available after January 2013.

Year 3


Year Three once again integrates theory and practice but also includes more actual application.

You must select and complete the following courses:

Four core required courses
CMN323 Introduction to Professional Practice
CMN324 Strategic Storytelling in Industry
CMN315 Issues in Communication and the Workplace
CMN325 New Media in the Workplace

Two core electives from ProCom. Not all electives will be offered each year. Choices include:

CMN305 Strategic Public Relations in Professional Communication Contexts, CMN306 Risk and Crisis Communication, CMN317 Governance in the Information Society, CMN321 Technical Comm as Knowledge Translation, CMN447 Communication and Law, CMN600 Science, Communication and Society

Two professionally related electives. You can choose elective courses in ProCom at the first, second or third year level or elective courses offered by other programs. Year 4


Year Four provides a capstone experience for students.

You must select and complete the following courses:

Three core required courses
CMN480 Research Methods in ProCom I
CMN490 Research Methods in ProCom II
CMN402 Theorizing Communication

Three core electives from ProCom.  Not all electives will be offered each year.  Choices will include:

CMN316 Questioning Numbers, CMN403 Visual Semiotics, CMN411 Special Topics in ProCom, CMN405 Oral Advocacy, CMN406 Communication in an Indigenous Context, CMN408 Proposal and Grant Writing

Two professionally related electives. You can choose elective courses in ProCom at the second, third or fourth year level or elective courses offered by other programs. To assist you with determining a communication stream or to pursue a Minor, we will provide you with guidance in your selection.  A list of professionally releated electives external to ProCom will be available after January 2013.
